My Favorite Quote

My favorite quote is “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” This quote is by my all-time favorite person, coach, and inspiration, Coach John Wooden. I believe that society today has become more concerned with reputation than character. I think this is because people, myself included, are always striving to be accepted and admired by others, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can lead to representing yourself as something you are not.  In today’s world of technology, with the overwhelming abundance of social media wherein our lives have become public, and we are all communicating so quickly, we need to take some time to slow down and reflect upon our inner spirit, in order to determine, and then remember WHO we really are. Sometimes it’s easy to get tangled up in the “popular,” “smart,” or “athletic” group, where we work to become the person that we believe others want us to be, and as we adopt the characteristics that are forced upon us, we may even become this other person, rather than staying true to ourselves and being the person we really aspire to be. I agree with Coach Wooden that your reputation, which is solely what others think of you, may not at all reflect who you really are, and that your character, who you truly are inside, is what is most important, and needs to be your focus in life.  People will always have their opinions about other people, and those opinions may even form an inaccurate reputation, but we should all take the time to look beyond that reputation, in others, and more importantly, within ourselves, because true character is what really counts in life.

Things I want to do before I die (from the little things to the big things)

This is my bucket list of some of the things I want to do before I die.

1. I have always wanted to sleep on the beach. I have tried this once but a few summers ago when my family rented a beach  house, but we were kicked off.

2. Make a raft out of sticks (like stranded people do in movies) and attempt to float on it, hopefully it is successful.

3. Pet an elephant. Elephants are my favorite animal and I have alwyas dreamed of going on an African safari and ride one.

4. Start a fire without matches. This is not only a good thing to know how to do for survival reasons if need be, but it is also seems like a fun thing to learn how to do.

5. Skinny dip in the ocean in the middle of the night.

6.Toss pizza dough in the air and successfully catch it.

7. Learn a new language and be able to communicate with people who are fluent in that language.

8. Run a marathon. I think this is something everyone should strive to do and I admire people who put forth so much effort to train for such a long race.

9. Jump off a water fall on a tropical island or rain forest.

10. Take part in an extreme sport such as sky diving or paragliding.

11. Climb a mountain.

12. Give a heart felt surprise to someone. It is always heart warming being surprised by a family member, friend, or soul mate. After a long week at work or school, this could truly make someones day so much better.

These are only some of the things I would like to do before I die. There are many more I have in mind and I love learning new ones to add to my list.

Health and Fitness for Busy People

For the people like me with extremely busy lives who value the importance of health and fitness and want to stay fit, there are multiple ways to incorporate fitness into a busy lifestyle. In my case, part of my hectic life is soccer which contributes to the fitness factor that we are all trying to maintain or get to. Soccer is a huge part of my life and takes up a lot of my time, however for the people who do not play soccer or  a sport in general, it is possible to do this. For example, walking to work or school is an alternative that is active and easy if you just allow a little bit more time in the mornings. There is also the option to invest in a gym membership somewhere to take advantage of their equipment. People who cannot financially own a gym membership can still exercise by going on a run in their neighborhood or doing stationary workouts in their houses such as sit-ups, push-ups, or leg raises. A proper diet is a huge part of being healthy and fit. I have found that an easy thing to do is drink water as opposed to other drinks such as soda. I have gotten into a good habit of ordering water when my family goes out to eat instead of soda or something else. That saves money too! The best way to stay healthy is to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and avoid fast food and junk food. Hope this helps people!

My soccer career and future

I haven’t decided if I  want to play soccer in college or not but I would like to if possible. When I was going through my years of improvement, I think I was held back a little during my prime years of development because my club teams kept falling apart in my prime years of development. I feel as if I was set back from my full potential because throughout my crucial learning moments I was on teams that fell apart. I am currently on what I would call my strongest team right now, however, it is my last year on this team because I am playing up and the majority of the girls are graduating this year. I want to play soccer in college but I think I am going to attend a junior college for two years and then transfer to a UC. My dream school is UCLA because I’ve been a bruin my whole life and my mom went there. I want to play at OCC and UCLA and become a athletic trainer for the football team. I have played soccer since I was about four, starting with indoor and transitioning  into AYSO, all-stars, and club. As exhausting and dreadful it can be times, I wouldn’t trade it for the world and I plan to play soccer for as long as I possibly can.

Fondest Childhood Memory

When I was a child I had many exciting memories. I visited all the islands in Hawaii in the first ten years of my life, and my family and neighbors would have block parties every Saturday until I was about 10 and some of my neighbors moved away. My mom always tells a story about how when I was three I got out of my bed and got a chair from the kitchen to open the top lock of our front door and got my big wheel tricycle and rode around the street. My mom woke up on early morning to a crib with no baby and an open front door, only to find me riding around the side walk on my big wheel. I only vaguely remember this but it seemed like it was fun and very much something I would do. My family always took many trips and vacations as I was growing up which made great childhood memories as well as develop close relationships with my parents and my sister. One of my favorite quotes is “Don’t you wish you could take a single childhood memory and blow it up into a bubble and live inside it forever?” by Sarah Addison Allen, a writer who wrote the Lost Lake. There are times in my life when school, soccer, or work gets hard or stressful. Its these times where I wish that I could blow up my childhood trips to Hawaii into a bubble and live in it now and forever.

My Pets

I have two pets, a cat and a dog. My cat’s name is Quincy and he is half long haired main coone and half bobcat, I know, weird. He is grey and has several black and white markings on him. I remember when we got Quincy, we went to PetCo and walked around the kitten adoption for  while before we passed this cage with a blanket over it, so nobody could see him. My sister lifted it up and waved my mom and I over to look at it. Before we could even get a good look at him, a worker came over and put the blanket back down and said “Oh, you don’t want that one.” He was very quick to dismiss him. My mom asked why and he told her it was because they were looking for a unique environment for this ferrel kitten, as he was found in the Bolsa Chica wetlands. He said that he felt the kitten needed to be adopted by an older person that would be able to focus all of their time on him. My mom told him that he was wrong and there was no better thing for this cat than two little kids that will crawl under the bed to get him out and play with him. Also, my sister and I weren’t that young, she was 11 and I was 9. Both mature enough to handle a kitten and be smart with him. We got him and named him Quincy and he’s been the best cat ever!

I also have a yellow lab named RVCA, named after the surf brand. My family was driving down to a soccer tournament in Chino Hills when we saw a guy on the side of the road with a box of puppies. We didn’t stop on the way to our game but we did after. There was a box with about 8 puppies in it and a man that spoke very little English. The father of the puppies was there too, resting his head on the bumper of the mans truck taking a nap. He looked like a very relaxed and good dog. My sister and I were holding all of them, thinking there was no way my mom would go for this. Little did we know, we would soon be driving home with our $240 RVCA whom we picked from the box on the side of the road. She just turned 3 and she is the most loving dog in the world.

My Life Outside of School

Outside of school I like to do a lot of things. I go to school, play soccer, work, finish my homework on time and try to maintain a social life. I go to school five days a week, have high school soccer three days a week during off season, club practice twice a week, immediately following off season, and work weekends. Fridays, Saturday, and Sundays I work at Islands. In the little free time I have I like to go to the beach with friends, when its warm outside, go on adventures and hikes. I love the beach and take advantage of our great California weather as much as I possibly can. I recently inherited my dog full time from my dad who passed away this last December and I love taking her to the dog beach or river jetty because she loves it and my dad loved taking us there. My life is pretty much consumed by soccer, as I play about 10 to 12 hours a week. Believe it or not, sometimes on the weekends when I’m not working or in a tournament I go to the park with friends and kick the ball around. On rainy weekends I like to sit at home all day and watch 10 of the 50 episodes of Law and Order: Special Victums Unit. I have the best friends in the world and they have been with me through thick and thin. I hangout with my friends whenever I can and love spending time with them, whether its cleaning one of our houses or going on crazy fun adventures. I am very busy and never have a dull moment but I wouldn’t trade my crazy, hectic, and loving life for the world.
